Major League Soccer 2022 welcomes expansion franchise Charlotte FC

The Major League Soccer 2022 season kicks off on February 26 as America and Canada’s top-flight soccer division returns for its 27th season. The league seems to start earlier each season, giving fans of MLS more action each campaign.
As has been the case in recent MLS season, the division will welcome a brand-new club, Charlotte FC. The new franchise is MLS’s 28th team.
What is Major League Soccer 2022’s format?
The new MLS season will continue the league’s 34 match schedule. Teams will play 17 home matches and 17 away fixtures in 2022. The 28-team league is separated into two conferences – East and West – with 14 team making them up.
Teams will play home and away against their conference rivals for a total of 26 games. Clubs will then play an additional eight matches against teams from the opposing conference to make a total of 34 games. A singular MLS team will not play against all other 27 clubs in the division.
The top eight teams in each conference will qualify for the playoffs. An MLS team simply has to be good to make the postseason and have a chance at winning the MLS Cup. Just six teams per conference will miss out on the MLS Cup playoffs.
Who won the MLS Cup 2021?
The MLS Cup 2021 was played on December 11 and now, two months later, it is easy to forget just how the previous season ended. New York City FC (part of City Football Group) claimed their first-ever MLS Cup.
The team won the final 4-2 on penalties against Portland Timbers. New York City FC dominated the fixture with Portland forcing extra-time thanks to a 94th minute goal.
While New York City FC won the MLS Cup 2021, the New England Revolution won the Supporters’ Shield trophy for tallying the most points in the regular season.
What to expect in MLS 2022?
There are several trophies up for grabs this season. Of course, the MLS Cup will be contested in the autumn of 2022. Prior to that, MLS teams will compete in the U.S. Open Cup tournament against professional and amateur clubs across the U.S.
The tournament returns from a two-year hiatus and kicks off on March 22. The final is set for September.
New York City FC will play the Campeones Cup against Liga MX Campeones de Campeones winner later this year. The Super Cup has been played between MLS and Liga MX teams since 2018 and it will occur once more this campaign to add further silverware to the season.
The 27th season of MLS has a lot to offer soccer fans around the world. With 28 teams in the division and an eight-month season, fans have a lot to look forward to this season.
