Can Sevilla win their first La Liga title since 1946?
2055

Sevilla’s first and only La Liga triumph came all the way back in 1946 – more than three-quarters of a century ago. Today, they stand a genuine chance of ending their 76-year wait for glory.

As we enter the last quarter of the season, Los Rojiblancos find themselves second in the table – six points shy of Real Madrid. With third-place Real Betis eight points behind Sevilla, the La Liga title battle is now a two-horse race.

Of course, Real Madrid have the upper hand. Los Blancos have lost just two of their 26 league games this term and have scored far more goals than anyone else.

Still, it is important to remember that Sevilla have also suffered only two La Liga defeats this season. Although they have picked up three wins fewer than Real Madrid, they remain in contention for the trophy.

It is also worth noting that Julen Lopetegui’s side boast the best defensive record in the division, having conceded a measly 18 goals. They have kept 13 clean sheets in 26 games, meaning they have a shutout rate of 50%.

Rafa Mir has been the main goal-getter for Los Rojiblancos this term, netting eight times in La Liga. Lucas Ocampos (5 goals, 2 assists), Papu Gomez (4 goals, 1 assist), and Youssef En-Nesyri (3 goals, 2 assists) have also chipped in.

On top of that, Ivan Rakatic is enjoying an outstanding purple patch in the twilight of his career. The former Barcelona star has bagged six goals and four assists across all competitions this season, including three goals and three assists in La Liga.

Sevilla head into Round 27 on a 12-game unbeaten streak in the league, having secured seven wins and five draws since losing to Real Madrid back in November.

It is worth pointing out that Lopetegui’s men still have to face Real Madrid before the season ends, with Los Blancos traveling to Andalusia on April 17. If they win that game, they will give themselves an excellent chance of clinching the title.

With 36 points still up for grabs between now and the end of the campaign, Sevilla could well secure their first La Liga title since 1946.
