Leicester vs Liverpool – Match Preview

After an opening evening of the season defeat to Manchester United, Leicester have managed to put that loss at Old Trafford behind them. Since then it has been successive defeat to Claude Puel’s men and they look to continue their unbeaten run this weekend.

That could well prove to be a difficult task though as they play host to a Liverpool side that find themselves at the top of the Premier League after earning a maximum return of nine points from their first three matches.

The Foxes made it successive wins last Saturday as they eventually got the better of 10 men Southampton. It is fair to say that the winning goal came from an unlikely source as Harry Maguire grabbed a dramatic winner.

The fact that he scored the goal is perhaps not the most outlandish thing you’ll witness, it was more that he used his feet instead of his head. That probably does the England international something of a disservice, as it was a very well taken finish that gave Leicester all three points.

Manager Claude Puel probably didn’t care how the goals went in last weekend, he would have just wanted to get one over his former employers Southampton. Especially after he was sacked by the club at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Revenge was certainly served at St Mary’s, but the focus shifts on how the 2016 Premier League winners are going to stop a side that have designs on winning this season’s edition of the English top flight.

Last weekend saw Liverpool make relatively light work of Brighton at Anfield, although the 1-0 final score line perhaps suggests otherwise. That said on another day it could well have been three or four goals as the margin of victory.

As it was, just the solitary goal that was enough. One that came from last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah. His effortless finish in the first half proved to be the difference as the Reds already find themselves two points clear of Manchester City.

It is perhaps a little too early to fire the starting pistol for this season’s title race, however Liverpool will certainly be buoyed by their positive start and will look to continue that momentum this weekend when they travel to the East Midlands.

Not only that but with the international break on the horizon, Jurgen Klopp and his players would love nothing more than making it twelve points from a possible twelve before the first hiatus of the season is upon us.

Especially as when the action resumes they travel to Wembley to face Tottenham, who themselves have had a very impressive start to the campaign. That however is still further down the line and Jurgen Klopp must not overlook the threat of Leicester.

The hosts managed without Jamie Vardy last weekend and will have to do so again as he sits out the second part of his three-match ban. Their lack of bite up front will certainly be a factor, as Liverpool go on to make it four wins from four.
