Huesca topped the Segunda Division table ahead of Cadiz last season but have, so far, found life much tougher in the top-flight. Huesca have never enjoyed a prolonged spell in La Liga, so avoiding relegation this season would be a triumph.

About the Club

Name: Sociedad Deportiva Huesca. Nicknamed, Oscenses, Azulgranas and Los de la cruz de San Jorge

Kit: Predominantly navy-blue shirt and shorts with red pattern and trim.

Founded: 1960

Stadium: El Alcoraz. Capacity, 7,638.

Manager: Miguel Angel Sanchez Munoz, aka Michel. Michel played most of his career with Rayo Vallecano, retiring in 2012. Michel represented Spain at U16, U18, U19 and U20 level but never earned a senior international cap. Michel started his managerial career at Rayo Vallecano in 2017 and left the club in 2019 with a win ratio of 38.20%. In June 2019, Michel joined Huesca and guided the club back to La Liga for only the second time in the club’s history.

Key Players: Javier Galán, David Ferreiro, Pedro Mosquera and Rafa Mir.

History

Huesca have never won a major trophy and have spent most of their time in the 3rd and 4th tiers of Spanish football. It wasn’t until 2008 that the club reached the Segunda Division for the very first time, remaining there for five seasons before suffering relegation. Huesca were back in the second tier in 2015 and stayed there for three campaign before clinching promotion to La Liga in 2018. The club’s first spell in the top-flight ended in relegation, finishing 19th, but Huesca returned to Spain’s premier competition at the first time of asking under the guidance of Michel.

As Things Stand

Huesca currently find themselves bottom of the La Liga table having won just one of their opening 15 matches. However, there is still hope for the newly-promoted club as they are only 3pts adrift from safety with plenty of games left to play. Huesca have made a knack of staying in games and have managed to secure 9 draws already. The club have only lost 5 of their opening 15 fixtures, fewer than 8 of the clubs that currently sit above them.

Defensively the club could improve but this isn’t where their main issue lies. Goalscoring has been the biggest problem for Huesca and the club could really do with bringing in another striker and a creative midfielder in the January transfer window to give themselves a decent chance of avoiding the drop.
