Gulf Cup of Nations Final

Iraq vs Oman - 19/01/2023

Gulf Cup of Nations Final
2366

We have reached the final of the 25th edition of the Gulf Cup of Nations. The game will take place on the 19th of January at the Basra International Stadium with Iraq taking Oman.

Iraq are the hosts of the competition and Oman are aiming to match their 2018 achievement by winning the tournament.

Iraq started the 2023 Gulf Cup of Nations in Group A along with Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Iraq began the competition with a fixture against fellow finalists Oman and the game ended 0-0.

Iraq made no mistake in their second group match as they beat Saudi Arabia 2-0, scoring one goal in each half of the game. The final group match for Iraq was against Yemen and the Lions of Mesopotamia blew their opponents away, winning 5-0 to top the group.

Into the semi-final and Iraq met Qatar, who won the tournament in 2014. Iraq opened the scoring in the 19th minute to the delight of the home fans but the joy was short lived as Qatar equalised 9 minutes later.

However, Iraq regained their advantage shortly before half time and prevented Qatar from scoring in the second half to win 2-1 and reach the final.

Trends show in their last 12 consecutive matches in the Gulf Cup of Nations, there have been no losses for Iraq. The only time they have come off second best in those 12 games is losing via penalties to United Arab Emirates in 2018 and Bahrain in 2019.

Oman were drawn alongside Iraq in Group A of the 2023 Gulf Cup of Nations and held the hosts to a 0-0 draw in their opening fixture. That laid a solid foundation for Oman and they beat Yemen 3-2 in their second group fixture.

Oman made hard work of the game against a team who regularly struggle in this competition but came back from 2-1 down to win. The final game of the group came against Saudi Arabia and Oman recorded a good 2-1 victory, scoring the winning goal in the 84th minute.

Oman played defending champions Bahrain in the semi-final and scored the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute to qualify for the final.

Trends show there are no losses for Oman in 10 of their most recent 11 games in the Gulf Cup of Nations.

Team news and Iraq will call upon tournament top scorer Aymen Hussein in attack and can also rely on Ibrahim Bayesh to find the back of the net from midfield.

Oman have shared their goals around the team but Issam Al-Sabhi is a threat in attack, with Harib Al-Saadi capable of scoring goals from midfield.

If we take the first meeting of these teams in the group stages as an indicator for the final, this is going to be a tight game.  We do not expect to see many goals and this match could end 0-0, with the possibility of the match going all the way to penalties.
