Matchday one in the 2. Bundesliga sees Eintracht Braunschweig take on Holstein Kiel at the Eintracht-Stadion with both sides aiming to move on from poor displays in the 2022/23 season that saw them completely fail in their pursuit of promotion.

While it wasn’t the worst season for Holstein Kiel, as they finished way clear of the drop zone and in the top half of the table.

The club finished their season with 12 wins from 23 games that year and lost the same amount of games too. However, with 10 draws and a terrible record of 61 conceded.

Only Arminia Bielefeld and SV Sandhausen managed to let in more goals, although Kiel did also score 58 times, which was only bettered by Paderborn, Dusseldorf, and Heidenheim.

During the preseason encounters, Kiel had a pretty solid record, as they only lost to AGF in a 2-0 defeat.

The club, however, would go on to beat Rantzau by a stunning 9-0 scoreline before beating Weiche Flensburg 1-0 and Slovacko 1-0.

Towards the end of the 2. Bundesliga, however, Kiel failed to win their last four games after a 1-1 draw with Paderborn and another 1-1 clash with Sandhausen.

They then went on to lose to Jahn Regensburg and draw 0-0 with Hamburger SV.

In fact, Kiel's last competitive win was against Braunschweig, as Fabian Reese scored the opening goal alongside finishes from Holmber Friojonsson and a finish from Timo Becker.

Maurice Multhaup and Danilo Wiebe would bring two goals back for Braunschweig on home soil, but the three goals was enough for Kiel to get the win.

As for Braunschweig, they finished just two points above the relegation zone with a gap on Bielefeld, as the clubs both won nine games, although the former lost just 16 compared to Bielefeld's 18.

What's more, Braunschweig also scored just 42 goals, which was the fourth-lowest in the division last season.

They also had a tough campaign throughout the summer, although the club did defeat Real Betis 3-1 in a preseason friendly.

Further losses to Hamburger SV II and Preuben Munster meant they let in nine goals throughout preseason. They also drew 0-0 with Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Towards the end of the season, Braunschweig did manage to beat Hannover 96 and Hamburger to guide them to safety, while their only loss in the final five games was to Nurnberg.

Forebet predicts a win for Kiel and for the game to see over 2.5 goals.
