Real Madrid to continue fine form against Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad host Real Madrid on Sunday night at Anoeta to end the weekend’s La Liga action. The fixture will be a showcase of two teams going in opposite directions in the table.

The Royals were one of the surprise packages in the Primera finding themselves in the top form when the league was suspended. Since the break ended, Real Sociedad have taken just one of six points and are now in trouble of falling down the table.

Real Madrid are just two points back of Barcelona and could leapfrog the league leaders on matchday 30. Barcelona travel to Sevilla on Friday night which is a recipe for disaster for the Blaugrana. A loss would allow Los Blancos to take over the top spot in La Liga.

The Royals have played well against Zinedine Zidane’s team over the last four meetings. Just one of those four games ended in a loss as Real Sociedad claimed three wins.

Their La Liga match in November saw Real Madrid claim a home victory thanks to goals from Karim Benzema, Federico Valverde, and Luka Modric. All three goals came after Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose opened the scoring in the second minute.

Real Sociedad did exact revenge on Real Madrid in February as the teams played out a wild 4-3 Copa del Rey fixture. The Basque club’s momentum from winning that match helped carry them onto the final which they will play against Athletic Club.

It is momentum that Real Sociedad do not have currently. The club played well up to the March hiatus and it was the break in play that has stopped the club’s great form. Now, Imanol Alguacil is trying to get that momentum back and keep the team contending for a Champions League qualification place.

Momentum is one thing Zidane has as Real Madrid have scored three goals in each of their two games since the break. Zidane also has in-form striker Benzema who scored two goals against Valencia on Thursday night in a 3-0 win.

Los Blancos have the Primera’s best defence after matchday 29. Just 20 goals have been allowed by Real Madrid for a mere average of 0.69 goals conceded per game. Real Sociedad have scored the league’s third-most goals with 46 and average 1.6 goals a game.

Seven of the last eight games between these clubs ended with over 2.5 goals while five of the last six finished with both sides scoring. Sunday’s game should see goals go into the back of the net and both trends continue.

Real Madrid will come out on top in the league once more as Real Sociedad’s woes post-hiatus continue.
