Zagreb to Edge Past Astana in the 1st Leg of Round 2

Dinamo Zagreb take on Astana at the Maksimir Stadium in the first leg of the second Champions League qualifying round with the Croatian side just beginning their season for the 2023/24 1. HNL campaign with a loss.
Following on from another sensational season for Zagreb in Croatia, the club began their latest season in the top flight with a loss to Hajduk Split.
They did finish above them in the table last year by a comfortable 10 points, but things were very different this past weekend.
Zagreb took the lead and looked like taking all three points when Bruno Petkovic scored another goal after his sensational season from last campaign.
However, two second half goals, including a 93rd-minute winner, won it for Split on matchday one.
Just prior to this, the 1. HNL champions did, however, defeat Split in the Croatian Super Cup final just under 10 days ago.
Martin Baturina scored that day for the club in a 1-0 victory that earned the club their second trophy within the past year.
Zagreb were, on the other hand, beaten in the semi-finals of the Croatian Cup by Sibenik back in June.
As for Astanta, they are sitting second in the Kazakhstan Premier League to Ordabasy by three points after losing two of their 17 games so far.
The club did draw 0-0 with Atyrau after also beating Kaspiy Aktau in the league just prior to that.
Astana are also heading into this game after losing to Ordabasy 2-0 in the Kazah Cup second leg semi-finals, two weeks on from beating them 1-0 in the first leg.
Igor Ivanovic scored in the first leg, while Azbal Beysebekov was sent off in the second leg encounter.
In the Champions League first qualifying round, Astana defeated Dinamo Tbilisi 3-2 across two legs.
The first match ended in a 1-1 draw at home for the Kazakh club, as Abat Aimbetov scored after 11 minutes before an equaliser for Tbilisi in the second half.
Leg two saw Beysebekov score before Dembo Darboe netted another goal less than a minute later in an excellent comeback win.
This game will also mark the sixth match from seven games this month for Astana, with the Kazakh league in full swing.
It means they and the rest of the division remain one of the busiest on the continent.
