Stuttgart and Darmstadt set for high-scoring Bundesliga game

Stuttgart and Darmstadt will play in the Bundesliga for the first time since 2015-16 on Friday night at the Mercedes Benz Arena.

The new Bundesliga season started differently for both clubs. Stuttgart are fourth in the standings after four games, tallying nine points.

Despite selling captain Wataru Endo in the summer, Stuttgart are playing some of their best football in years.

An argument can be made that all three of Stuttgart’s wins this season came against teams in 10th place or lower in the standings. Still, this could be a relegation-fight-free season for Stuttgart.

The same cannot be said for Darmstadt. The newly-promoted Bundesliga side are 17th in the standings, with one point from four games.

After three consecutive defeats to start the new season, Darmstadt secured a 3-3 draw with lowly Borussia Monchengladbach last time out.

Stuttgart went unbeaten in five of their last six games against Darmstadt in all competitions.

Their last four meetings featured both teams scoring goals. Two of the teams’ last four head-to-head meetings finished with over 2.5 goals.

Both of Stuttgart’s home matches this season ended as wins. The team racked up goals in those matches, too, scoring 10 times.

Meanwhile, the Swabians conceded zero goals to their opponents.

Striker Serhou Guirassy leads the Bundesliga with eight goals already. He contributed 57% of Stuttgart’s goals in the early stages of the season. The Swabians top the Bundesliga in scoring with 14 goals.

Darmstadt’s battered defence will need to find answers to the questions asked by Stuttgart’s attack.

The Lilies conceded the most goals in the Bundesliga after four games, with 13. Darmstadt conceded three goals in each of their last three matches.

Coach Torsten Lieberknecht has a long list of injuries going into the match on Friday night. Eight players could miss the game through injuries, forcing Lieberknecht to call upon back-ups to fill in the holes.

Meanwhile, Matej Maglica is out of action with a suspension.

Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß will be without at least three players as Thomas Kastanaras, Laurin Ulrich, and Nikolas Nartey are all absent with injuries. Joshua Vagnoman could be available following an ankle injury.

Stuttgart started the season well with favourable fixtures. Their favourable fixture list should see them defeat Darmstadt at the weekend.

The win could send Stuttgart to the top of the table for at least Friday night. The Swabians should win 3-1 as they continue scoring goals.
