Birmingham City return to St Andrews for this upcoming clash against Leeds United which is equally important for both clubs as they search for valuable points over this festive period of fixtures in the Championship.
Birmingham have recently had two away fixtures on the trot which have resulted in a heavy 3-0 defeat at Hull City before grabbing a decent point at Blackburn Rovers in a 1-1 draw on Boxing Day.
However, having suffered back-to-back defeats at St Andrews in recent matches on home turf, there appears to be no safe haven for The Blues at the moment.
Losses to QPR 2-0 and a narrow 3-2 loss to West Brom in the west midlands derby means that Pep Clotet’s men have picked up just 1 point from the last possible 12 on offer, and the pressure is increasing upon the Spaniard to start getting results for Birmingham.
The Blues have lost 3 of their last 4 matches at St Andrews and confidence is likely to be fragile for the hosts ahead of this encounter, but recent meetings against Leeds United have been marginal affairs with only a single goal deciding the outcome of the last four clashes, of which Birmingham have won 3 of these 4.
Onto Leeds United and the visitors laboured to a 1-1 draw with Preston North End on Boxing Day at Elland Road and although they hold a useful 8-point cushion over 3rd placed Brentford ahead of Sunday’s action, the Yorkshire club know how important it is to continue their momentum over the festive period.
Leeds sit in 2nd place and just 3 points behind Championship leaders, West Brom, prior to this Sunday’s trip to the west midlands to face Birmingham City who have registered 1-0 wins in both of the last two encounters against Leeds at St Andrews, so Marcelo Bielsa’s men won’t be taking anything for granted here.
The Yorkshire club have lost just 1 of their last 13 matches though overall in the Championship and look the more likely to grab the three points than their hosts this Sunday, but their recent 2-1 defeat at Fulham shows they can be vulnerable too.
Prior to that loss at Fulham, Leeds had picked up three wins on the trot at Luton Town, Reading and Huddersfield Town, so they’ll still be confident that they can get a result against a struggling Birmingham City outfit here.
