Manchester City-Liverpool draw shows there is little between the pair

Manchester City-Liverpool draw shows there is little between the pair

On Sunday afternoon, the top two teams in the Premier League met at the Etihad Stadium, as leaders Manchester City hosted second-place Liverpool.

The game produced a 2-2 draw full of action, good football and talking points.

The encounter also showed why the gap between the two teams is just a solitary point. City were the better team in the first half and arguably should have had a bigger lead than 2-1 at the break.

However, almost straight from the second half kick-off, Liverpool equalised through Sadio Mane. The goal showed the resilience of Jurgen Klopp’s team.

They came out in the second period with the sort of determination needed to pull themselves level and back into the crucial clash. A defeat would have proven massively damaging to the Red’s title challenge.

They also survived a Raheem Sterling goal ruled out through a tight offside call in the second period.

The result means that both league meetings ended 2-2, which also suggests there is not that much between the two teams. There is no doubt about it, the pair are in a league of their own in the English top flight. Third-place European champions Chelsea have flagged over the season and are some distance behind now.

When it comes to the Premier League title, it is still so hard to call. The fixture list seems to favour City, but in football, there are no guarantees and anything can happen. There is still plenty of football to be played in the Premier League campaign.

The two league fixtures have not been able to separate the pair. However, they meet again this weekend in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

It would not be a major surprise if extra-time and penalty kicks are needed to separate them judging by this season’s previous meetings.
