London’s iconic Wembley Stadium is the venue for Wednesday’s Finalissima between European champions Italy and Copa America winners Argentina.

This is the third edition of the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions. France won the inaugural showpiece all the way back in 1985 before Argentina won the previous edition in 1993.

This is destined to be an intriguing battle between two of the world’s top international teams. But who will come out on top? Let’s take a closer look at both sides.

Italy booked their place in the 2022 Finalissima by winning Euro 2020 last summer, adding a second European Championship crown to their collection.

The Italians secured three clean-sheet victories in the group stage before dispatching Austria, Belgium and Spain in the knockout phase. Funnily enough, they beat England at Wembley in the final.

Since the European Championship, Roberto Mancini’s side have enjoyed a mixed bag results – recording three wins, four draws and two losses in all competitions.

Italy last played back in March, sealing a 3-2 friendly win over Turkey thanks to a brace from Sassuolo forward Giacomo Raspadori.

As for Argentina, they punched their ticket to the 2022 Finalissima via last summer’s Copa America triumph – their fifteenth Copa America title overall.

The Argentines won three of their four group games before knocking out Ecuador and Colombia on their way to beating Brazil in the final.

Remarkably, Argentina are currently enjoying a mammoth 31-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.

Having picked up eight wins and three draws since the 2021 Copa America, Lionel Messi and co. will be confident of upsetting the European champions.

Head-to-head: The overall head-to-head record of this fixture stands at six wins for Italy, five wins for Argentina and five draws.

That said, Argentina have won each of the past four meetings between the teams – most recently notching a 2-0 friendly win back in 2018.

Team news: Leonardo Spinazzola returns to Italy’s squad, but Ciro Immobile missed out due to an ankle injury. There are also debut call-ups for Andrea Pinamonto and Davide Frattesi.

On the flip side, Argentina’s star-studded squad includes Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala.

This is set to be a close-fought battle between two top sides. For that reason, we are likely to see a tight low-scoring clash.

Forebet predicts that Italy and Argentina will play out a draw in normal time, with both teams scoring under 1.5 goals. The Finalissima looks set to go the distance.
