Porto and Sporting set for thrilling derby showdown

The Dragões vs. Leões fixture between FC Porto and Sporting CP headlines Saturday’s Liga Portugal schedule, as the two rivals aim to maintain their unbeaten starts to the season.

With two games in the books, Porto find themselves at the top of the table after securing back-to-back wins and scoring six goals.

Meanwhile, Sporting sit fifth – two points behind Porto – having registered one win and one draw. Funnily enough, they have also scored six goals this term.

Who will claim the bragging rights at the Estadio do Dragao? Will the Dragons triumph on home soil? Or will the Lions spoil the party? It’s time to take a closer look at both sides.

Let’s start with the hosts, Porto, who have picked up where they left off last season after losing just one of their 34 league games en route to clinching the title.

The defending champions kicked off their 2022/23 campaign with a 5-1 thrashing of Maritimo, racking up 60% possession and 22 shots in the process.

Last time out, Porto snatched a 0-1 victory over Vizela. Despite seeing 68% of the ball, the visitors needed a 90th-minute winner from Ivan Marcano.

Thanks to a strong end to the previous campaign, the Dragons are currently enjoying an 18-game unbeaten streak in home league games.

When you look at the bigger picture, Porto have lost just one of their last 36 Liga Portugal clashes. That is not good news for Sporting.

As for Sporting, they kicked off their 2022/23 campaign with a manic 3-3 draw against Braga. Pedro Goncalves, Nuno Santos and Marcus Edwards scored the goals.

Last weekend, Goncalves bagged a brace as the Lions crushed Rio Ave 3-0. Not only did they enjoy 68% possession on home soil, but they also chalked up 20 shots.

It is worth noting that Sporting have avoided defeat in each of their previous ten away games in the Portuguese top tier.

Better still, the Lions have lost just three of their past 36 Liga Portugal encounters. They will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds on Saturday.

Head-to-head: Each of the last four league meetings between Porto and Sporting have ended in a draw, with two of those clashes producing over 3.5 goals.

Sporting have failed to win any of their previous 11 league meetings with Porto, registering six draws and five losses in the process.

Team news: Porto duo Mehdi Taremi (4 goals, 1 assist) and Evanilson (2 goals, 2 assists) have made an eye-catching start to the season.

Meanwhile, Pedro Goncalves (3 goals, 0 assists) and Marcus Edwards (1 goal, 2 assists) have starred for Sporting. Daniel Braganca will miss Saturday’s clash through injury.

Saturday’s clash is destined to be an eventful encounter between two fierce rivals, with multiple goals expected at both ends of the pitch.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Porto and Sporting will play out a high-scoring draw. Over 5.5 goals are expected at the Estadio do Dragao.
