Faltering Newcastle braced for tricky test against Man City

Saturday’s late kick-off in the Premier League sees out-of-form Newcastle United welcome Manchester City to St. James’ Park.

Having lost five of their last six league matches, the Magpies find themselves ninth in the standings – 11 points shy of third-placed Man City.

Following a run of three victories in four games, the defending champions sit five points behind table-topping Liverpool with a game in hand.

Eddie Howe’s men claimed a morale-boosting win against Sunderland in the FA Cup last weekend, crushing their arch-rivals 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.

That victory ended a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats for Newcastle, who were thrashed 4-2 by Liverpool on New Year’s Day.

The Magpies lost just three of their opening 11 Premier League matches this season, but they have since suffered six defeats in nine league encounters.

Still, Howe’s men can take confidence from their impressive home record, as they have won eight of their 10 league matches at St. James’ Park this term, keeping six clean sheets.

Manchester City also claimed a convincing FA Cup victory last weekend, thrashing Championship side Huddersfield Town 5-0.

Pep Guardiola’s men have now won each of their last five games across all competitions, with seven victories coming in their previous eight outings.

When you look at the bigger picture, Man City have suffered a solitary defeat in their last 18 matches, adding the Club World Cup trophy to their silverware collection in the process.

Having won each of their last four away games – scoring 11 goals along the way – City will back themselves to spoil Newcastle’s home record.

Head-to-head: Man City have avoided defeat in each of their last nine Premier League meetings with Newcastle, racking up seven wins for good measure.

Thanks to a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in August, Guardiola’s men have won seven of their previous eight league matches against the Magpies, scoring 26 goals in the process.

Team news: Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali remains suspended, with Nick Pope, Matt Targett, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Callum Wilson and Joe Willock out injured.

As for Man City, there are still question marks over the fitness of Erling Haaland and Manuel Akanji, while John Stones is sidelined through injury.

Regardless of Newcastle’s strong record, Man City look set to inflict a fourth successive Premier League defeat on Howe’s side.

Forebet predicts that free-scoring Manchester City will net over 2.5 goals on their way to dispatching Newcastle United.
