Quick Turnaround for Liverpool at St Mary’s

Quick Turnaround for Liverpool at St Mary’s
2419

The Premier League continues this weekend with the second round of fixtures this season.  There are several games to look forward to on Saturday including the meeting between Southampton and Liverpool at St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton are still searching for their first point of the season and will be hoping to impress in their opening home game of the new campaign. Liverpool arrive on the south coast following their win in the UEFA Super Cup over Chelsea in Istanbul.

It was a very disappointing start to the 2019/20 Premier League season for Southampton as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at Burnley.  It is never easy going to Turf Moor but to come away with a 3-0 loss is very disappointing and The Saints will need to up the level of their performance if they are to take something from this game.

Trends show Southampton have won just one of their last eight Premier League matches.  You must go back seven Premier League games to find that win and it came in the 2018/19 season at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.  Since then, Southampton have lost three and drawn three of their six league matches.

However, Southampton have remained undefeated in five of their last six games at St Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League, winning three of them.  They have seen over 2.5 goals in six of their eight most recent league matches.

Liverpool came home from Istanbul with the UEFA Super Cup having defeated Chelsea on a penalty shootout. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and the game went into extra-time, something which Liverpool could have done without.  Nonetheless, they pressed for a winner before succeeding in the penalty shootout.

The Reds started their Premier League campaign with a comfortable 4-1 win over newly promoted Norwich City at home.  Liverpool were expected to win the match and were 4-0 up at half-time before allowing their opponents a goal in the second half.

Trends show Liverpool are undefeated in their last eighteen matches in the Premier League.  They have recorded ten straight wins, four of which have come away from home.  Liverpool have scored 2 or more goals in each of those four away wins and have won by 2 or more goals in five of their last eight away wins at Southampton.

Team news and Southampton should have a full squad available for this game.  There could be some changes from the team which started at Burnley, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Michael Obafemi pushing for a place in the starting XI.

Liverpool could make changes following their game on Wednesday night.  Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum could all come into the team.

Southampton have a lot of work to do if they are to get something from this match.  Liverpool may have had a long night on Wednesday but they won and are expected to do so again here.  An away win to nil is a distinct possibility.
