Can Borussia Dortmund Respond Positively to Defeat?

The Bundesliga returns to action on Friday this week following the international break but the bulk of the games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.  Arguably the biggest game of the early kick-offs on Saturday comes at Signal Iduna Park as Borussia Dortmund host Bayer Leverkusen.

As things stand ahead of the weekend fixtures, Borussia Dortmund are in 5th place with 6 points to their name while Bayer Leverkusen are in 4th place, with 7 points.  Therefore, the result of this match will have big consequences for the top of the table.

Borussia Dortmund started the season strongly, beating Augsburg 5-1 at home. They then made the trip to Koln and came away with a 3-1 win to make a good start to the season for the title contenders.

However, things took a turn for the worse when they travelled to another newly promoted team prior to the international break.  Borussia Dortmund went down to a 3-1 defeat at Union Berlin which destroyed some of the early season confidence at the club.  It was a match they were expected to win.

Trends show Borussia Dortmund have won each of their last three home games in all competitions.  They have won eleven of their last thirteen home Bundesliga matches and have won four of their last seven by 2 goals or more.

Both teams have scored in eleven of Borussia Dortmund’s last fourteen home matches in all competitions.

Bayer Leverkusen started the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign with a 3-2 home win over Paderborn. This was a game they were expected to win but the visitors made it a good contest.  Bayer Leverkusen then travelled to Fortuna Dusseldorf and came away with a good 3-1 win.  They were 3-0 up before half-time and the job was done.

Bayer Leverkusen dropped their first and only points of the season to date at home to Hoffenheim before the international break.  Neither team could make the breakthrough in a match which ended 0-0.

Trends show Bayer Leverkusen are on a good run of ten games without defeat in all competitions.  They have won each of their last five away matches in all competitions and have managed to score at least 1 goal in their last twelve away Bundesliga games.

Team news and Borussia Dortmund are without Mateu Morey who has a dislocated shoulder.  Manuel Akanji and Nico Schulz are doubtful while Thorgan Hazard and Axel Witsel have returned to training.

Bayer Leverkusen travel with just one injury problem.  Joel Pohjanpalo is suffering from an ankle injury and is unlikely to play any part in the game.

This is a big game for both teams as they attempt to stay with the early leaders.  We should see over 2.5 goals and both teams scoring but with the home advantage, you have to fancy Borussia Dortmund to get the job done.
