Huge Top of the Table Clash at Stamford Bridge

Two of the Premier League’s Champions League representatives meet this weekend in what has the makings of a tremendous game.  On Sunday afternoon, Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge in this biggest game of this round.

Chelsea start the weekend in 6th place in the Premier League and know a win could see them move up as high as 2nd place. Liverpool are currently 5 points clear at the top but this will be their biggest test of the season to date.

The Blues opened their Champions League campaign on Tuesday night with a disappointing 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Valencia.  In what could be a tight group, it was a poor result for Frank Lampard’s team.

However, they covered themselves in glory in their previous Premier League game as they thrashed Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-2 away from home.  Not many teams travel to Molineux and do that to Wolves.

Chelsea have played five games in the Premier League this season and have won two, drawn two and lost one.  The defeat came on the opening weekend at Old Trafford and they were then held at home by Leicester City.  The first win of the season came at Carrow Road in a 3-2 victory over Norwich City but again Chelsea were held at home, this time by Sheffield United.

Trends show Chelsea are undefeated in their last eleven home Premier League games and they have scored at least one goal in their last ten at Stamford Bridge.

Much like the hosts, Liverpool lost their opening Champions League game on Tuesday night. It was a tough assignment in Naples but the 2-0 defeat at Napoli was not the best way to the begin the defence of their European crown.

However, it has been business as usual in the Premier League and Liverpool have won all five of their matches this season.  They started with a 4-1 home win over Norwich City before beating Southampton 2-1 away.  A comfortable 3-1 home win over Arsenal followed before a 3-0 win at Burnley prior to the home victory over Newcastle last week.

Trends show Liverpool are undefeated in their last twenty-two Premier League games and have won each of their last fourteen.  However, they have not been as good defensively at the beginning of this campaign have kept just a single clean sheet.

Team news and Chelsea are definitely without Ruben Loftus-Cheek and have doubts over N’Golo Kante, Emerson, Antonio Rüdiger, Marco Van Ginkel and Mason Mount.

Liverpool make the trip to London without four players as Alisson Becker, Divock Origi, Naby Keita and Nathaniel Clyne are injured.

We should be in for a great afternoon of football at Stamford Bridge.  Chelsea will attack as the home team and that could leave space for Liverpool to hit them when they are in possession of the ball.  We could see over 2.5 goals with both teams scoring and Liverpool must go down as the favourites to win.
