Germany rolled to a 5-1 win to open the Euro 2024 tournament on home soil. Now, Julian Nagelsmann’s team will face off with Hungary on matchday No. 2 of the tournament.

Will our algorithm predict a win for Germany against the Mighty Magyars?

Germany had no trouble seeing off Scotland on the first night of the tournament. Goals came early and often, as Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug, and Emre Can all got onto the scoresheet.

The Germans should not be slept on. This is a team trying to rediscover themselves, and they are doing it on home soil.

Hungary fell 3-1 to Switzerland to start the Euros. Kwadwo Duah opened the scoring for the Swiss in the 12th minute before the lead was doubled on 45 minutes by Michel Aebischer. Barabas Varga pulled a goal back for Hungary before Breel Embolo added a third.

These teams have played six times since 2004. The matches were divided in wins, draws, and losses, with two wins, two draws, and two defeats apiece.

These teams last met in the Nations League in 2022. A 1-1 draw in Hungary was followed by a narrow 1-0 Hungary win back in Germany. Indeed, the last three head-to-head matches between these teams saw Hungary get a positive result.

Despite Hungary’s good form against Germany in recent meetings, the Germans have not lost in their last five matches in all competitions. Nagelsmman had them playing well in the first match, however, Hungary are arguably a better team.

Although Hungary lost to Switzerland, they are still capable of finishing second in the group. Germany’s ability to have five different goal scorers in match No 1 was impressive, however.

Hungary will need captain and star player Dominik Szoboszlai to step up against the Germans. The midfielder had a poor second half of the club season for Liverpool. That form could carry over into the Euros.

Szoboszlai needs the players around him to step up as well. The Hungarian captain played as an attacking midfielder just off the lone striker Varga in match No. 1. Despite having 49% possession, Hungary had just six shots and two hitting the target.

Hungary’s defence allowed 15 shots to Switzerland. They cannot afford to let Germany have sight of goal.

Although Germany rolled to victory in match No. 1, they should find Hungary to be a more difficult opponent.

The Hungarians should get another result, with the match finishing 2-2 according to our algorithm’s score prediction.
