Austria topped Group C ahead of rivals France and the Netherlands. Now, the Austrians are aiming to take down Türkiye in the round of 16.

Will our algorithm forecast a win for Austria in the last 16?

While Austria took top spot in Group C, Türkiye finished second in Group F behind Portugal. Türkiye took six points from nine in the group stage.

Vincenzo Montella’s team won 3-1 over Georgia and 2-1 against the Czech Republic in the group. Türkiye did fall to Portugal in Group C, 3-0, and were played off the park. The Turks scored five goals and conceded five times during the group stage.

Austria scored six goals and conceded four times in the group. They too took six points during the group phase.

Ralf Ragnick’s team lost 1-0 to France to start the tournament due to an own goal. A 3-1 win over Poland followed on matchday No. 2 before an incredible 3-2 victory over the Dutch.

Austria are heavy favourites according to leading bookmakers. However,  Türkiye have the better head-to-head record of the two Euro last 16 rivals.

Türkiye posted a record of 4W-1D-3L in the teams last eight meetings dating back to 1982. These teams met as recently as March 2024 in a friendly. Austria smashed Türkiye 6-1 in the match. Can they do it once more?

Rangnick used a 4-2-3-1 formation in the win over the Dutch. Mark Arnautovic started in attack, with Marcel Sabitzer playing behind him as a No. 10. Sabitzer scored the winner in the 80th minute for Austria on matchday No. 3.

Cenk Tosun rescued Türkiye in their final group stage game. Tosun scored in the 94th minute, turning a dismal draw into a win. Türkiye dominated the match with 18 shots and 69% possession. However, the Czech Republic played with 10 men for 70 minutes.

Montella will match Ragnick in formation, with a 4-2-3-1 of his own. Baris Yilmaz of Galatasaray will likely lead the line. Inter’s Hakan Calhanoglu should start as the No. 2 playing behind Yilmaz.

Neither team has had a repeat goal scorer in the tournament. Each team has had a different scorer for each goal.

Rangnick will be without winger Patrick Wimmer for the fixture. He is banned for the match, creating a hole in the Austria team. Adding to Rangnick’s headaches were the absences of Gernot Trauner (thigh) and Phillipp Mwene (illness) from training this weekend.

Can Austria’s magic run continue? Our score prediction doesn’t believe so, at least not in regular time. Our score prediction is for a nil-nil draw after 90 minutes.
